FAQ’S

Q?What is the best way to reserve a program, class, or party
A.

Our weekly schedule is very full.  We go to schools from 8 am to 3 pm, have events in the evening from 6-8 pm, Saturday science classes, and weekend parties (up to eight a weekend).  We also clean cages, feed, and water animals on a daily basis (about 4 hours a day).   Due to our schedule we are sometimes unable to answer our phone for requests.  We do answer emails throughout the day and will answer all emails by the end of the day.  Our email address is bugs@bugladykansas.com.

You are free to call us, but please be aware that it may be several days before we are able to return your call. We hope you understand.

Q?What is the best way to hear about upcoming events or happenings with The Bug Lady
A.

We do post events that are open to the public, new classes, or any happenings on our face book page: The Bug Lady’s Science Academy.  We will soon have a blog area on our website that will also notify you of different events.  You can also sign up for our newsletter via our website.

Q?Is The Bug Lady open for us to just drop by to see the animals
A.

I am sorry we are usually doing or attending events during the day.  We have had requests for us to do an “open” play event for individuals that want to visit without doing a party or doing another event.  We hope to have such events planned in the future.

Q?We did an event last year and would like to do another. Is there a way to have a different program
A.

Yes, if our group has seen us a hundred times like most of you have we will adjust the program and make it fun and different.  Please be advised that some animals/insects are standard in our programs like tarantulas and cockroaches.  Children just cannot get enough of those…

Q?What is the process when gifting a program to my child’s teacher
A.

The first thing to do is to make sure that the teacher is ok with having us come.  You can then ask the teacher to email us so we can plan the arrangements directly with them.  Due to our space requirements and other logistics it is easier to speak directly with them.  They can email us at bugs@bugladykansas.com

Q?What forms of payment do you take
A.

We take cash, checks, and all major credit cards.  If the check is returned there is a $25 fee for all returned checks.  Our credit card processing is done on a secured network.  It does not storage credit card numbers in any way on our system and cannot be recalled at any point after the transaction.

Q?What if my child is at an event and there is inclement weather
A.

All care will be taken in the event of a tornado or other bad weather.  We do have two rooms (without windows) that can be used to take shelter.  We do not have a storm shelter.

Q?We have a Groupon and I did not get anything booked prior to the expiration. Am I out the money paid
A.

We ask that you book your Groupon prior to the expiration.  If it does expired then we will honor the amount paid towards a like event.  If there is a difference in price then that difference will need to be paid.  Our events do change so we can not guarantee once expired that we will be have the same offerings.  Groupons cannot be put towards a different event than what it was purchased for.  Example cannot put a science class towards a birthday party.

Q?How do we redeem a gift certificate or a raffle prize we won
A.

Everything is based on availability.  Just email us your request and we will tell you what necessary info we need for your specific need.

Q?What if we have more than 20 children attend our parties
A.

We have a 2400 sq. ft. facility that can handle more than 20 children.  There is a fee of $5 per child if over 20 children.  All children 2 years old to 16 years of age are counted.  Adults are not included in the count, but we only have seating for 30 adults.  Please note that if siblings decide to stay they will also be counted.

Q?Do you have online or paper invites available
A.

We’re sorry, but at this time we do not offer that option.  We hope to have it soon.

Q?Do you have a shop for people to buy buggy birthday gifts
A.

Yes, we do we have gifts starting at $2.50 up to $22.00.  We have ant farms, ladybug lands, bug catchers, bug keepers, bug nets, and other bug related gifts.  If gift is purchased we also offer a free gift bag.

Q?Are we allowed to bring in outside food to a birthday party
A.

You can bring in outside food like fruit trays, meat trays, sandwiches, and other snacks.  If you choose the Classic Party you will need to bring your own cake and drinks as well.  If wanting to order pizza we ask that you order that from us.  To add pizza we need at least a 24 hours notice so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Q?When do we pay for a party and is there a deposit
A.

We do not require a deposit to book a party.  Your party will need to be paid by the end of the event.  We accept cash, check, or credit card.  If you need to cancel we do ask that you do that as soon as possible to give us the necessary time to rebook your slot.  If bake goods are ordered then you are responsible to pay for that portion.  Bake goods are ordered the Tuesday before an event.

Q?Is there a surcharge if we have two birthday children
A.

No we do not charge an additional fee for having a party for multiply children.  We do charge $5 for the extra canvas needed when doing “Cockroach Art”.

Q?How early can we arrive prior to our party
A.

Due to our animal welfare we are unable to open our doors prior to 5 minutes before your event.  This applies to everyone.  Once doors are open guests will wait in our lobby until all the start time of the party.  At that time we will give the necessary instructions pertaining to safety in our animal studio.

Q?What if I want to bring balloons or other decorations
A.

We do have bug themed decorations in our facility.  There is not need to bring other decorations unless you want to.  We will try and accommodate your requests.

Q?Are we allowed to bring ice cream to our party
A.

We do not allow ice cream at parties.  Children tend to take FOREVER to eat cake when combined with ice cream, which in turn cuts into our time for our planned events.  We also do not have a freezer that is available for storing the ice cream.  Our freezer is used with regards to our animals.

Q?Does a parent need to stay for science classes
A.

Parents do not stay at any of our science classes.  We find that children are not as adventurous when they have a parent present.  Parents sitting in our lobby tend to be very distracting to our other students.  Our classes are done is a large group format.  If you feel that your child will not do well in that type of format then we suggest that you wait to enroll.  We do allow time to explore with your child at the beginning of class and towards the end of class.

Q?How do I enroll in a class
A.

The best way is to email us your child’s name and age, a contact phone number, and the date you want to attend.  We will email you to let you know if that date is available and get them on our enrollment list.  The week of class we will email out more info about the class as well as an enrollment form.  If you child has attended a science class before then you will not need to fill out the form again.

Q?If I am taking a science class with a Groupon then when do I give that to you?
A.

The Groupon will need to be redeemed by us.  Do not redeem from home or it will say that it is already used and you will not be able to use it.  You can print it out Groupon (must have barcode numbers on it) or present it on your smart phone and we will scan it from there.

Q?Can we request the critters that we want at an event?
A.

You can make a request for certain animals to attend, but there is no guarantee that they will be present.  We choose animals that are age appropriate for the group that we will be visiting.  We also have our animal’s care as our highest priority, so if an animal is unable to attend due to weather/temperature, molting/shedding, illness, etc. they will not attend.

Q?Where does The Bug Lady get her animals?
A.

Often they are given to her from people that no longer want them.  Some are also rescued from situations of neglect.  The Bug Lady does not buy animals due to the large amount of funds that it takes to care for her current animals.

Q?What if I want to give her an animal? Does she take every animal offered?
A.

We are sorry, but we do not take all animals that are offered.  Although, we are honored and appreciate that we were considered for a home for your animal.  We base our decision on the particular need of the animal and if we are the right home.  If we are unable to take your animal we will give suggestions on where a good home may be.

Q?Is The Bug Lady regulated by any agencies?
A.

Yes, she is regulated by United States Agriculture: Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services.  This is a Federal Agency with an inspector that routinely monitors our facility and the care of our animals.

Q?Does The Bug Lady have any highly venomous or dangerous animals?
A.

No we do not have anything highly venomous animals.  We do however have animals that can bite or nibble such as guinea pigs, bunnies, or other animals.  Our animals are used to being around children.  Thankfully, we have not had anyone hurt due to all the precautions that are taken while animal interactions are taking place.

A.

Based on a Kansas State Statue:

Article 40: Assumption of Risk of Domestic Animal Activity

Statutes:

60-4004: Posting warning notices, specifications; contract language requirements.

Q?Does The Bug Lady promote children to get animals?
A.

No she does not.  She does stress the time, care, and money that an animal will require.  It is usually suggested that if a child cannot clean their room or brush your teeth without their parents asking then they probably are not responsible enough to get an animal.

Q?What if we wan an animal, but we are not sure what is right for our family?
A.

The Bug Lady can give you suggestions on what animal is right for your family and for your children.  She can also direct you to the right pet store to get the animal and possibly get you a store discount (depends on purchase).
